Mortimer Menpes (Australian/ British, 1855 - 1938), "By the Light of the Shade", 1898, etching, drypoint and aquatint, Morgan 163, edition of 51 portrait of an elderly female Breton peasant reading in rocking chair, previously thought as a possible portrait of Menpes's mother, signed with pencil lower right, printed by the artist in colors on light laid cream paper with margins, as issued, there is a black ink only version with a probable larger edition, unframed, hinged to mat under clear cover, very light wear consistent with age including very light even toning, block size: 9 3/4" h. x 7 3/4" w., paper size: 12 1/2" h. x 9 3/4" w.
