Pre-Columbian, Central Coast Peru, Chancay culture, ca. 800 to 1200 CE. A woven and braided textile defensive sling or tump line, made from camelid wool (alpaca or llama) fiber. The cords are thickly braided with a split cradle panel at the center covered in patterned weaving in blue-black, red, and yellow ochre hues. This cradle would support the burden when used as a tump line and could also launch stones as a protective slingshot. When not in use as either, the weaving is lightweight and perfect to use as a belt. Size: 84" L x 1.75" W (213.4 cm x 4.4 cm)
Provenance: ex-private Bishop Family Trust collection, the Trust of the late Bill Bishop, a noted antiquarian with shops in Scottsdale, Arizona and Allenspark, Colorado, USA, acquired before 2010

Condition
Active flaking to fibers when handled. Fraying and unraveling of threads and losses to fibers as shown. Nice remains of patterning and cords are largely intact. We recommend storing in a case to preserve the textile.
