Roman, perhaps Roman-occupied Britain, Imperial period, ca. 1st to 4th century CE; Western Europe, England, Medieval Period, ca. 14th to 15th century CE. A fine selection of 4 intricate brooches, 3 cast from leaded bronze and 1 from brass. First is a leaded bronze avian brooch with a raised head as well as brown and white enamel inlays decorating the wings and tail. Second is a discoid brooch with a protruding central knob surrounded by blue and white enamel inlays. Third is a fragmentary English Medieval brass antelope brooch shown in a striding pose with recessed cavities containing red and blue enamel. The largest is a leaded bronze brooch of annular form featuring blue and white enamel inlays along the ring-shaped face as well as a trio of petite circular protrusions adorned with red enamel. Size of largest (annular): 1.11" W x 1.68" H (2.8 cm x 4.3 cm)

Condition
Brass antelope brooch is a fragment of a larger composition. All brooches have lost their pins. All pieces have chipping to enamel inlays, with light encrustations, and slight bending to overall forms. Great patina throughout, and nice remains of enamel inlays.
