Description
A Patriotic Medal issued by the Kriegersverbund. This hollow-back medal stamped in brass, was made to be suspended on a ribbon, now missing. Depicting a Maltese cross flanked with oak leaves and acorns, there is an inner title ring with the words, 'Gewidmet vom kriegerver.' at top, and 'Cues' at bottom, indicating it is from a veteran’s organization in 'Cues', which refers to Bernkastel-Kues, a German town in the Mosel wine district. Title ring encircles a cut out image depicting a profile view of Kaiser Wilhehlm II. Although it cannot be determined if it was to its original form, the medal does show remnants of a finish in the patriotic colors painted to the cross, with the image of the Kaiser showing evidence of a former silver wash finish. Issued by the Kriegersverbund, a war veterans' and reservists' association established in 1873 in Weissenfels, Germany. Although the organization went through several name changes, the name 'Deutscher Kriegerbund' was kept for almost all promotional and organizational events. In 1896, the Deutscher Kriegerbund built a memorial to honor and all German warriors of 1888, the monument was located on Kyffhäuser mountain. Shortly after, all German veterans groups consolidated into this one organization, formally changing it's name to Kyffhäuserbund in 1900. Throughout its existence, the Kriegersverbund hosted many Veterans reunions and other memorials, most of which issuing their own commemorating medals and pins. This is one of those medals, from a WWI event, a very rare veterans medal.
