Item Details
Description
Joseph John Paul Meert (1905-1990)

Sawing Wood

Circa 1935

The 1930s Regionalist genre scene of men working a portable saw mill powered by a make-do assembly of a gas-powered engine cooled by a Model A automobile radiator and fed fuel by a steel drum behind a clapboard house is signed by the artist in pencil lower right on the original mount and titled in the same hand lower left.

In the 1993 exhibition catalog for Under The Influence: The Students of Thomas Hart Benton at the Albrecht Kemper Museum of Art in St. Joseph, Missouri by Mariane Berardi, she describes Joe Meert as, 'A reticent man, dreamer, who painted beautiful pictures with a poetic brush.' and says that he was .'generally acknowledged to be (one of) Benton's favorite pupils at the Art Student League.' in New York City.

At about the time this drawing was done, Meert, 'followed Benton to the Kansas City Art Institute in 1935 where he served as Benton's assistant in the painting department. During his tenure at the Art Institute, Meert produced Post Office murals under the patronage of the WPA in Marceline and Mount Vernon, Missouri and in Spencer, Indiana.'

Sight size measures 12.75 x 15.25 with a framed size of 22.25 x 24.5 inches.
