Description
Clarence Montfort Gihon (1871-1929)
A Parisian Square at Night
Circa 1925.
The oil on canvas view of a Parisian square at night with shop lights on cobblestones, perhaps Square du Tertre, is signed by the artist lower right. The artist's depiction of women in cloche hats and shorter dress lengths establishes the period, as does the model of taxi cab.
Clarence Gihon received his formal art training in the United Sates with, among others, the American Impressionist William Merritt Chase. He later traveled to Paris to attend Academie Julian and never returned to the US. He died there there 35 years later, having produced a great number of impressionist, pointillist and even tonalist paintings. His subjects documented Paris and its environs at the turn of the last century.
Canvas measures 24 x 29 with a framed size of 27.5 x 32.75 inches.
