Description
A Chippendale carved mahogany chest of drawers Philadelphia, PA, circa 1770
(H: 33 1/2 in. W: 35 1/2 in. D: 22 1/2 in.)
Rectangular top with a molded edge, above four graduated drawers with batwing brasses, fluted quarter columns, molded base with shaped ogee feet.

Condition
nice overall appearance, the surface mostly consistent with some areas of hazy film, particularly to the top-most drawer and front upper edge and along left-facing side; minor occasional scuffs, scrapes, and scratches commensurate with age and use; top-most drawer face with large patch to left side and bottom right corner, and loss to upper right corner, with some apparent age cracks to right side, patch where locking slot was along top middle front edge; 2nd from top-most drawer: the facing possibly entirely replaced or repurposed from another piece, showing evidence of having plugged screw holes toward upper edge, age crack to bottom edge that runs the majority of the length; 2nd from bottom-most drawer: patch and loss to upper left corner of face, scratching to bottom right corner; bottom-most drawer: face with patches to upper corners and slight loss to upper right corner; brasses throughout are replaced, with one handle missing screw and with one escutcheon / bail pull presently detached (but present), signs of brass polish residue; the left side with age cracks; some repairs to breaks to side molding along back edges; the feet appear to be old, with old supports / blocks, and the foot facings with repaired breaks and/or patches, scratching to front right-facing foot; backboards possibly replaced, with evidence of later nails; the drawer interiors appear to be stained, and some with some mildew spotting / grime accumulation, some drawers with replaced runners to undersides; one detached wood support element (but present in bag).Â
