Item Details
Description
Ancient Central Asia, southern Azerbaijan and northern Iran, Meshkinshar region, Amlash, late Bronze Age, ca. 2000 to 1000 BCE. An interesting strainer or sieve vessel with a conical body pierced throughout, and a ring handle to one side. This vessel may have been used for filtering liquids such as beer, the sieve may have been fermentable material then placed inside of a larger vessel and covered with water and other liquids before sealing. Once the beer had been prepared or was to be moved to another vessel, the sieve would be removed and pressed to extract any remaining liquids. Sieves may have been used in bakeries as well since both breweries and bakeries were typically housed under one roof. The overall size and intact construction of this vessel makes it an exceptionally rare example from the ancient Near East! Size: 6" L x 5" Diameter x 5" H (15.2 cm x 12.7 cm x 12.7 cm)

A similar strainer vessel can be seen at the Israel Museum's website, object number: 2010-32 and the Metropolitan Museum of Art's website, accession number: 1972.222.6.

Provenance: private Greenwood Village, Colorado, USA collection, via inheritance; Leota Furlong Agett Persian Pottery collection, acquired in Tehran, Iran in the early 1960s
