Description
Pre-Columbian, South Coast Peru, Huari (Wari), ca. 700 to 1000 CE. A fabulous pair of colorful textile panels comprised of tightly-woven natural camelid (llama or alpaca wool) fibers and cotton, one featuring reptilian creatures and jaguars, and the other with humanoid faces. The serpentine form emitted from each mouth on the human head textile is representative of a "life force." The Huari designed much of their weaving using a grid pattern - exemplified here, and the cotton warps are nearly obscured by the brightly dyed wool wefts, note where the fabric is thin and worn, the white / brown cotton is left bare revealing their skilled weaving techniques! Both textiles are approximately the same size and mounted on custom wood frames and cotton backings. Size of textiles: 9" L x 8" W (22.9 cm x 20.3 cm); backing with snake heads: 13" L x 12" W (33 cm x 30.5 cm); backing with jaguar: 16" L x 11" W (40.6 cm x 27.9 cm)
