A Romano-Egyptian plaster funerary female head
Circa 1st Century B.C. - 1st Century A.D.
The black gesso-painted face with inlaid white eyes with 'black' glass pupils, the short curly hair surmounted by a headdress, 21cm high

Much like the wax based painted mummy portraits, these plaster portraits give us a glimpse of the individual faces of the Egyptians and the Roman influences over their hairstyles and fashion. These faces would have been made from a mould with individual details added in later in paint, stone, or with additional plaster and gilding.
