Seated on a chair with cross-hatched sides, an opened papyrus unscrolled across his lap, wearing a close-fitting cap and incised short kilt, 4.3cm high

Imhotep was revered by Egyptians as the overseer of the construction of the first monumental stone pyramid in the Third Dynasty. He was associated with wisdom and writing and by the Late Period he was considered a deity with power over health and fertility, like the Greek god Asclepius. Cf. C. Andrews, Amulets of Ancient Egypt, British Museum, 1994, pp.16-17, fig.11a.
