Item Details
Description
Fine Hand-built Napoleonic Coach Model for the Fisher Body Craftsman Guild (1931). Hand-built and submitted to the First Annual Convention Fisher Body Craftsman's Guild contest. Measures 18.5 x 10.25 x 8 inches. Very good condition, one wood bar in the back is loose. The Fisher Body was an automobile coachbuilder founded in 1908 in Detroit Michigan. By the 1920s they had become one of the largest suppliers of automobile bodies in America. At this time, Henry Ford of General Motors acquired the majority of the holdings of the Fisher Body Company in order to find employees with artistic talents, but there was a lack of designers available for hire. So, from the 1930s to 1948, The Fisher Body Company in Detroit (in union with General Motors) ran a series of competitions for teenage students. In the beginning of the competition, all participants ordered a set of model plans to build a Napoleonic Carriage, the logo for The Fisher Body Company. Two winners (one Junior and one Senior) from each of the 48 states were selected to take part as contestants for the national competition. The top national prizes were full college scholarships and guaranteed jobs with GM.The coach in this lot was constructed by Robert C. Prater of Billings, Montana. He entered the competition as one of the younger Senior entrants at just 16 years of age and won the competition at the state level. Included in this lot is a detailed letter on how he constructed his coach, pictures of the final product and other documents recalling his visit to Detroit. The quality of this coach demonstrates Mr. Praters skill, patience and attention to detail, and deserved his winning the competition at the state level. This item requires buyer pick-up or the use of an outside shipper.
