Description
Lampe de Bureau designed by Louis Kalff for Philips in 1956 and model name: Blanco Negro Evoluon. All original paint w/white shade color and black Z-frame and 2 brass threaded shade caps. 15 3/4 dia. x 17''h. Louis Christiaan Kalff (Amsterdam, November 14, 1897 - Waalre, September 16, 1976) was a Dutch graphic designer. His father was editor of the Algemeen Handelsblad. After a grammar school studied Kalff Quellinusschool (now the Rietveld Academy) and at the Technical University in Delft. Between 1925 and 1926, Louis Kalff with Jan Hanrath the building designed by the Delft Student Roeivereeniging ''Laga'' in the style of the Amsterdam School. In 1925 Louis Kalff joined the advertising department of Philips in Eindhoven. Under his leadership, was founded in 1929 the Light Consultancy (Libu). He took part in the World's Fair in Barcelona, Antwerp, Brussels and Paris. Kalff was the designer of the Philips logo. He also designed posters and advertising as a freelancer for the Holland-America Line, Calve, Zeebad Scheveningen, Holland and Radio. He also designed book covers. At Philips Kalff also worked as an architect on objects such as: Dr. AF Philips Observatory (1937) in Eindhoven, the Diamantboorderij (1948) in Valkenswaard and some rural houses in Eindhoven and Waalre for executives of Philips. After the second World War Kalff kept himself at Philips actively engaged in industrial design. After his retirement in 1960 Louis Kalff Philips remained as a consultant and architect. In 1961 he got the direction and execution of the Evoluon Lighting Group developing what turned out to be state of the art metal mid-century lamp designs. It was the last work of light architect advertising almost forty years took care of it Philips group.
