Philipp Franz von Siebold (1796-1866), Five Nippon Folios on Japan

in German, as follows: the earliest books a pair being Nippon. (Leyden, 1832), two volumes, three-quarter leather boards with gilt on the spines, the first book consists of text (14-1/2 in.), the second one with plates (21-1/2 in.) (chips to boards; varying degrees of water damage, some severe, to both books with heavy restoration to the title page of the text volume); the second pair of Nippon volumes, later 19th century, are bound without title pages, boards are three-quarter leather (23-1/4 in.), the thinner volume with maps and location views; the thicker volume with many subjects illustrated, both animate and inanimate. (wear to boards; internally fine); plus a third Nippon, being an overview and an index to Siebold's early work (Berlin, 1931), three-quarter leather over cloth (14-1/2 in.) (splits along hinge, else light wear).
Siebold, a German physician and naturalist, came to Japan in 1828. His curiosity, artistic talent, and deep interest in Far Eastern flora and fauna expanded to include all things Japanese. Siebold's expertise and enthusiasm in many areas resulted in these magnificent books that capture Japan's traditional essence.
