GREAT NORTHWEST COAST CARVED TOTEM. Comprising a large and impressive carved and polychrome wood totem modeled as a marionette depicting Tsonokwa by Native American artist Chris Von Edig. The figure with horse hair and bark shawl and skirt and with jointed arms and legs. Artist signed on verso. Length 44 inches. Tsonokwa is a figure in Kwakwaka’wakw mythology. She is an ancestor of the Namgis clan through her son, Tsilwalagame. She is venerated as a bringer of wealth, but is also greatly feared by children, because she is also known as an ogress who steals children and carries them home in her basket to eat.
Chris Van Edig was born in Kanesetake, Quebec on February 6, 1972. He is part native of the Mohawk Nation and part Deutch. Chris started off his creativity on artists prints. Since living on the West Coast he began to create West Coast Art under the apprenticing of noted artists Jimmy Joseph and Andy Bruce, who style is Kwakiult. He has been carving since 1994 and specializes in masks, totem poles and plaques. His connection with the Squamish Nation was apprenticing with Squamish Nations artists including the two noted.
