Description
LEONID AND RIMMA BRAILOVSKY Leonid Brailovsky (1867- 1932) and Rimma Brailovsky (1877- 1959)
Evening Church Procession in Old Russia - Circa 1930
Oil on wood panel
Signed in Cyrillic lower right L.R. Brailovsky and verso with numbered label 32
23.6 inches x 21.25 inches (60cm x 54cm)
Leonid Brailovsky was a noted Russian architect, artist, designer, decorator, teacher and a member of the Russian apostolate in the Diaspora. In 1898 he married the artist Rimma Nikitichana Schmit. After the revolution they first moved to Constantinople, then to Belgrade, and in 1925 they settled in Rome. It was in Rome where both Leonid and Rimma converted to Catholicism and became closely associated with the Congregation for the Oriental Churches in the Vatican. In 1932 the Brailovsky’s produced 40 paintings which were exhibited in the Russicum, where Rimma taught Russian language. It is likely that the offered lot is one of those paintings.
