Jon Zahourek (American, b. 1940). Two watercolor portraits of Native Americans, ca. 1960s to 1980s. Both portraits are hand signed. A pair of miniature watercolor portraits of indigenous sitters by Jon Zahourek. Zahourek rendered each person in a bust-length pose with traditional hairstyles, jewelry, and accoutrements. Each portrait is finely painted in a soothing palette of earthtones complemented by grey or sea green hues. Both are set in matching custom frames with linen-covered mattes. In the 1960s, Jon Zahourek dropped out of college to become an artist. By way of Taos, New Mexico and later Denver, Colorado Zahourek was part of a thriving community of artists, exhibiting his work with prominent contemporaries including Ned Jacobs, Buffalo Kaplinski, George Carlson, and Fritz White. In the 1970s, Zahourek moved to New York to teach painting. He continued as an artist and educator, and eventually fueled his passion for anatomy into developing a system for teaching anatomy which has been used by more than 6,000 classrooms across the United States.

Both watercolors are hand-signed by the artist. Portraits are framed behind glass and have not been examined outside the frames but appear to be in very good condition. Surface wear to frames with scuffs and chips as shown. Some stains to linen as shown. Both are fitted with a suspension wire and ready to display.
