McDonnell is a contemporary artist who paints with the intent of producing a natural image. Her process is fluid, organic, and one that usually doesn't have a goal in its beginning. She often uses unconventional painting tools such as dried paint brushes, branches and sticks, drawing colors and textures from nature itself. The paint itself is not laid in finality. She often scrapes it off, building it in layers and strokes to create ghostly imitations of paint. The result can be seen in this piece, which has a flat, print-like surface, the edges of the canvas caked with paint residue. Her attention to the process and to naturality means that her paintings have no clear forms, and therefore extend past the canvas.
