Description
Lee Jaffe Contemporary Mixed Media Artwork, Jamaica. Contemporary painting by Lee Jaffe (American, b. 1950). The composition features thirty-five Jamaican fifty dollar notes with Samuel Sharpe, some outlined with gold leaf and paint. Colored wax is layered with and on top of the notes along with cut-out letters. Jaffe famously documented and collaborated with Basquiat, but his own art practice, steeped in historical and social commentary, is lesser known. Jaffe often referenced Jamaica, a country he was introduced to by Bob Marley, with whom he spent years living and making music. Not signed. Linen canvas stretched on wood board. Consignor states that the painting was gifted to them by the artist.
