Artist Bio: Bruce Weber was born in 1946 to a Jewish family in Greensburg, Pennsylvania. His interest in photography started young, where he would work on various art projects and make 8mm films with his Dad. He studied art in Ohio at Denison College, eventually transferring to New York University where he studied acting. This is where his photography career truly began. He had set up his first small darkroom in an apartment located between Chinatown and Little Italy. This was where he processed the headshots he took of aspiring actors and actresses. This turned out to be great practice for his future endeavors. He was extremely interested in what the subject wished to express with their headshot, and would advise them how to communicate that sentiment through clothing and lighting. Bruce worked as a model in his early career, eventually turning to photography, studying at the New School with Lisette Model. While on a shoot with Francesco Scavullo, he was introduced to Nan Bush. She proved to be essential in launching Bruce's career in fashion. His first time photographing fashion catalogs was a shoot for Dillard's, which was awarded Catalog of the Year. He then went on to photograph for GQ, many of his photos appearing on the cover. Other very notable partnerships included work with Vogue, Ralph Lauren, and Calvin Klein. His black and white photos of male underwear models for Calvin Klein were iconic, particularly of Olympic athlete Tim Hintnaus. He continues a black and white theme throughout most of his career. He also was accomplished in filmmaking, taking part in over a dozen films and music videos, and published quite a few books containing collections of photographs. He also has independently published an arts journal for the last seventeen years, titled All-American. As you can see, Bruce was an extremely accomplished photographer. He has been featured in many prominent museums including Dallas Contemporary, Detroit Institute of the Arts, and Museum of Contemporary art in North Miami. He won many awards and nominations for his work in fashion, photography, and filmmaking. Among them, Fashion Photographer of the Year from the American Society of Magazines, along with awards from the Council of Fashion Designers of America, Fashion Video Awards, and the Clio Awards. He also won the Living Legend Award for Photography and Film from the Pratt Institute of Art. His work in filmmaking also gained him recognition at the Cannes Film Festival and Venice Film Festival.
