In 1974, Volkswagen was concentrating on the production of the classic Golf, and when two of its employees, Konrad and Lowenberg, suggested to the higher-ups that they design a sports model, the idea was immediately discarded. However, the two did not give up and, outside working hours and on weekends, they dedicated themselves to designing a car that would be good for grocery shopping but at the same time comfortable on the racetrack. They assembled a real team and, when this time they proposed their idea of a sober but sporty car to the board of directors, they immediately got their approval, the only limit imposed on them being the number of units to be produced, which was not to exceed 5,000. Finally in 1975, the Golf GTI, an acronym for Gran Turismo Iniezione, was presented at the Frankfurt Motor Show. This concentrate of sportiness, contrary to all predictions, quickly became one of the most coveted and iconic cars of all time.

This 1981 example was registered in December 1981 and remained with its first owner until it was purchased in December 2016 by the present owner. The car then underwent a conservative restoration of the bodywork and a general overhaul of the injection and mechanical organs. Specifically, the car underwent the following work: distribution change, water pump replacement, brake system overhaul with new hoses, disc drums and pads. It retains many original details, such as the wheels, bumpers, interior and plastics. The headliner was rebuilt with material from the period, and the trim was upgraded with Koni Street dampers and H&R springs. The Bosch K Jetronic injection has been completely overhauled and fitted with new injectors, as has the clutch and its linkages, which have been completely rebuilt. All work has been documented with photographs.

The car still retains its original sticker on the inside of the luggage rack where you can see that the car is painted Alpine White and has the following options:

034 reinforced springs, optional for Italy
046 side direction indicators
184 3-point seat belts
430 laminated windscreen
568 tinted windows

Still supplied with its original front number plate holder, this stunning Golf GTI Mk1 is offered with its original wheels with new tyres, a set of original ATS wheels and spare bumpers. Iconic, fun and fully functional, it is one of the best classic hot hatch cars ever
