AMERICAN SCHOOL (19TH CENTURY) FOLK ART MOURNING SCENE / CIVIL WAR PAINTING, watercolor on paper applied to board, depicting a Union soldier in a blue coat and cap with a "US" canteen on hip holding a rifle with attached bayonet, he stands next to memorial, featuring a graveyard with cross markers or headstones in the foreground and a columned mausoleum or building in the background, top edge with "18 (peace) 65" written in branch-like lettering covered in vines, no signature located. Housed in a period frame. Dated 1865. 3 1/2" x 4 3/8" object, 7 5/8" x 8 7/8" OA.
Provenance: From a private collection in Washington, DC.

Condition

Good visual condition with light toning, some fading/losses to paint, paper with wrinkling, some wear and a few losses to edges of paper including to lower proper left corner, frame with wear, surface scratches, and other imperfections.
