Description
ITHACA, NEW YORK SIGNED AND DATED DOUBLE WEAVE COVERLET, navy blue and natural cotton, two joined panels, center design featuring rosettes, various flowers, and birds, three sides having a floral border with peacocks. Bottom corners signed "WOVEN / AT THE ITHACA / CARPET / FACTORY, / BY / A. DAVIDSON. / 1842.", one block with later added "L L" embroidered initials. Top edge with later applied fabric strip for hanging. Archibald Davidson, Ithaca Carpet Factory, Ithaca, Tompkins Co., NY. Dated 1842. 79" x 88" without hanging fabric.
Provenance: A family heirloom obtained at time of manufacture.
Condition
Very good visual condition with some toning and stains/spotting, scattered losses notably to wool mostly minor/small in size, top edge possibly rolled and mended, bottom edge with losses and mends to cotton.
