CHARLES II ENGLISH SILK STUMPWORK PICTURE, silk, wool, gilt-thread, metal purl, and spangles on silk satin, center depicting King Charles II holding his hat in one hand and a sword in sheath on his hip, looking towards Catherine of Braganza wearing a necklace of pearls and holding a flower, they are surrounded by flowers as well as various animals and insects including a leopard, a stag, a caterpillar, a snail, and birds, upper third featuring a castle with mica windows and lower third with a tiered fountain, all encompassed by gilt-thread lace border. Housed under glass in an early, possibly original, burled frame. Second half 17th century. 21 7/8" x 17 1/2" sight, 27 3/8" x 23" OA.

Condition
Good to very good visual condition with overall light toning, scattered light stains, some losses including to wool outline thread probably due to bug damage, thread with some fading/fugitive color, gilt-thread lace is detached in center of upper edge, frame with wear, scattered cracks and hairlines, some losses and repairs including to proper left lower corner. Not examined out of frame.
