Ernst Degasperi was born in Merano, Italy in 1927 studied graphics under Prof. Paul Kirnig at the Academy of Applied Arts. From 1952 he worked as a graphic artist, becoming president of the artists' group The Spiral and a member of the Austrian Writers' Associaton, The Circle. In 1985, he founded a private initiative to rescue 200 children from a Philippine leper station. A number of his works made reference to the Holocaust.
Ernst Degasperi is the recipient of numerous domestic and foreign orders and has been awarded many prizes. The Vatican awarded him the Commander's Cross of the New Year's Order in 1984 , and the Republic of Austria awarded him the Austrian Cross of Honor for Science and Art II. and I. Class. Degasperi is the recipient of the First State Prize for the most beautiful book in Austria and the Cardinal Opilio Rossi Medal. In 2003 he was made an honorary citizen of the University of Vienna for his work in bringing people together and for his attempt to contribute artistically to understanding between the monotheistic world religions.
Special works are the cast concrete monument "Bereshit Bara" in Gedera in Israel.
