Description
Alexander Calder (American, 1898-1976) hand hammered sterling silver and wire reverse initial brooch pin dating to c1945. Authenticated by the Alexander Calder Foundation in New York City and registered in their archives under the application number: A19915. Accompanied by a Calder exposition catalogue dated for 1946 in Paris.
The brooch features the initials "LM", which stand for Louise Myers. The "L" in the brooch is executed backwards.
The brooch came to the current owner, Barbara LaPointe via her mother, Mary Myers Jones. Mary received it from her mother Louise Myers who worked as the top accountant for Hans and Florence Knoll (of Knoll Furniture). Louise was married to Howard Myers, publisher of "The Architectural Forum". The Myers were good friends with Mr. and Mrs. Knoll and ran in the same social circle as Alexander Calder. The brooch was either a gift from Howard Myers to Louise, or it was specially commissioned by the Knolls for Louise.
The brooch is 2 x 2 7/8" and it weighs 8.9g. The exhibition booklet is 6 1/8 x 4 5/8"
