The Italian couturier Franco Moschino opened his atelier in 1983 with an inimitable design style. Expecting to work as a painter or illustrator, Franco Moschino instead factored artistic movements and pop cultural references into the foundation of his garments. Highly influenced by Dadaism and Surrealism, Moschino's work embodies the whimsical, the gaudy, and the theatrical: a prime exhibitor of Susan Sontag's notion of camp. Exaggerated, playful, and saturated characterize the mark of a quintessentially Moschino piece. Never one to shy from color or commit fully to concept, Franco Moschino entrusted the creative direction of his couture house (as well as his 1988 ready-to-wear line, Cheap and Chic Line) to the lively mind of Rosella Jardini until the brand's 2013 succession to Jeremy Scott.
