Italian fashion designer - fully named Maria Adélaide Nielli - Nina Ricci founded her eponymous couture house in 1932 after several decades worth of experience in Parisian dressmaking as a designer at the House of Raffin. Madame Ricci's method of draping directly onto the body resulted in flattering, feminine forms. Muted tones, softened palettes, and lightweight silhouettes signified Nina Ricci's dignified, ladylike clientele. While initially popular among the French bourgeoisie, the house of Ricci expanded into the American industry in the 1960's, due in part to the establishment of Nina Ricci's ready-to-wear line.
