MARIA MONACI GALLENGA: PURPLE SILK VELVET CLOAK

Item Details

Description

A purple silk velvet cloak featuring a pattern of alternating mythical creature medallions throughout and bullion cord tie with murano multi-string tassels. The cloak is lined in yellow satin and was designed by Maria Monaci Gallenga. There is no label or size. The width is approximately 50 inches, shoulder to hem is approximately 48 inches.
Please note: The stenciled border is shattered, but the garment and lining are in excellent shape.
Together with her husband Peter, Maria Monaci Gallenga illuminated the 1920s and 30s with the design strategies flowing from her Florentine studio. Recognized for innovation in print technique, Gallenga's wooden matrices and pigmented metallic powders mimicked a hand-painted feel. The stenciled textiles, cloaks, and capes of the Gallenga body of work often invoke Medieval and Renaissance art history, and currently grace the permanent collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
