Description
A black silk velvet jacket with a pattern featuring Renaissance animals and a soldier in gold and silver stencil and lined in black silk chiffon with double bullion ball tassel ties at neck. The jacket dates to the 1920s and was designed by Maria Monaci Gallenga. There is no label or size present. The chest is approximately 38 inches, shoulder to hem is approximately 25 inches.
Together with her husband Peter, Maria Monaci Gallenga illuminated the 1920s and 30s with the design strategies flowing from her Florentine studio. Recognized for innovation in print technique, Gallenga's wooden matrices and pigmented metallic powders mimicked a hand-painted feel. The stenciled textiles, cloaks, and capes of the Gallenga body of work often invoke Medieval and Renaissance art history, and currently grace the permanent collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
