"Beacon Rock #1, Newport, RI", 1941. Etching. Signed & titled. Matted & unframed. Artist Wiliam Drury spent his last years in Newport and was beguiled by the mansions & coastline. This image is of Beacon Rock, the iconic Newport estate later acquired by famed sculptor Felix de Weldon, creator of the Marine Corps War Memorial. Sited on a rocky bluff that offers panoramic views of Newport, the gated & grand residence was originally called the Acropolis of Newport and is styled after the ancient Stoa of the Athenians.
