Description
second half 19th century, 206 x 144 cm, South East Europe, Bulgarian / Serbian border region
The rare field design of this Pirot prayer kilim is a striking feature. A set of arches with three small niches is seen at the upper end, and below it there is a green tree of life with branches arranged in pairs that point diagonally upwards. A horizontal blue line divides the field into two segments. Five long-stemmed flowers (probably tulips) are suspended from the line. The tulip panels of Ladik prayer rugs obviously served as models for these. A small green tree with two blossoms and four pomegranates stands at the lower end of the field, flanked by two convoluted yellow figures that may represent abstract animals. – Very good condition, original finishes all around.
