Western Europe, Spain, ca. early to mid-20th century CE. A cast brass devotional piece known as "Instruments of the Passion" or "Arma Christi," a scene with a crucified Christ. The Instruments of Passion are objects from biblical stories that are used to help contemplate the death and suffering of Christ. Starting from the top: a chalice, a sponge on a staff, a hammer, pincers, spear, pitcher, a rooster on a pillar, sword, cat of nine tails, dice, his robe, ladder, and a skull and cross bones. This type of overt Christian imagery was usually made and displayed in predominantly Catholic countries. The surface is a golden hue with trace amounts of gold gilt and the base is mounted on a custom wooden stand. Size: 3.5" Diameter x 8.5" H (8.9 cm x 21.6 cm); 9.75" H (24.8 cm) on included custom stand.
Provenance: ex-private Bishop Family Trust collection, the Trust of the late Bill Bishop, a noted antiquarian with shops in Scottsdale, Arizona and Allenspark, Colorado, USA, acquired before 2010

Cross and Jesus structure is loose and not attached to base but is supported by ladder. Missing the dangling ornaments under cross arms. Surface nicks and casting imperfections. Attached to wooden base.
