Native American, northwest Mexico and southwest United States, Yaqui people, ca. 20th century CE. A rare wood and brass dance rattle known as a sonaasom, se'nasum, or sonaja resembling the side of a tambourine and used by the pascola dancers of the Yaqui people. The wood rattle displays a pointed, openwork rattling head in the form of a rectangular prism and fit with 2 brass disks that produce a tinkling sound. The head is attached to a curved handle that ends in a bulb-like finial pierced with 4 drill holes and tied with a suspension rope. Size: 11.8" L x 2.2" W (30 cm x 5.6 cm)
