East Asia, China, Ming to early Qing Dynasty. ca. 15th to 18th century CE; Central Asia, Tibet or Nepal, ca. 19th century CE. A lovely pairing of a Chinese porcelain bowl and a silvered-iron lidded jar from the Himalayan region. The bowl rests on a ring form foot, the thin walls slipped in a white hue with cobalt foliate motifs and longevity knots. The cast iron jar features a hinged lid with a loop clasp that could accommodate a lock for securing the precious contents. The exterior is etched and embellished with 15% silver gilding over scrolling spirals and foliage motifs surrounding 8 auspicious Buddhist symbols. The bowl fits perfectly inside the box like they were made to travel together, despite their different origins. Size (iron box): 6.5" Diameter x 3" H (16.5 cm x 7.6 cm)

Box lid does not easily close due to indentations and slight bending of interior rim tabs. Chips and age expected surface wear and areas of dark patina, overall great condition. Pottery bowl has surface pitting and fading of painted motifs, otherwise intact and nice craquelure to glaze.
