Ancient Near East, Mesopotamia, Sumer, ca. late 3rd to early 2nd millennium BCE. A mold made pottery pendant or charm of a bull's head, facing forward and a suspension hole pierced through the top of the head. The Sumerians believed strongly in magic, and the magical powers of amulets, created to be deterrents against the Evil Eye. The oldest of these amulets are stone animal form ones like this. The bull was a symbol of fertility and virility, and several gods and goddesses were associated with bovine creatures. Size: 1.8" L x 1.5" W (4.6 cm x 3.8 cm)
Provenance: ex-private Bishop Family Trust collection, the Trust of the late Bill Bishop, a noted antiquarian with shops in Scottsdale, Arizona and Allenspark, Colorado, USA, acquired before 2010
