Commentariorum de bello Aphrodisiensi libri quinque, FIRST EDITION, printer's device on title, folding woodcut map of the Mediterranean between Sicily and Carthage (A4-5), historiated initials, a few marginal ink annotations, without the final blank, title laid down, small trail of worming on preliminary leaves touching a few letters, light damp-staining, map strengthened on verso with very small loss to image, modern half vellum, red morocco spine label, rubbed [EDIT16 CNCE 34624; Adams N368; Atabey 881], 8vo (140 x 90mm.), Rome, Valerius & Ludovicus [Dorici], 1552

RARE FIRST EDITION. An account of the 1550 attack and capture of Mahdia, on the Tunisian coast, by the troops of Charles V led by the Genoese condottiere Andrea Doria. Mahdia, located on the Tunisian coast was also known as the Port of Africa, and it was the headquarters of the Turkish corsair Dragut, a once Genoese galley slave. In retaliation, the Ottoman fleet captured Tripoli in 1551 and entrusted it to Dragut who served as governor until his death in 1565 at the siege of Malta.
