Carlo Scarpa
Venini & C., Murano
Eagle with sword. Approx. 1930-1943. Slightly opalescent glass, iridescent. Applications and foot with gold foil fusions. Seated eagle holding a sword in its claws. H. 24 cm. Marked on the bottom: venini murano (two-line etching stamp) and company label Venini.
The figure goes back to a design by Carlo Scarpa from 1943. At the suggestion of the rector of the University of Padua, it was designed in the context of other figures as a table decoration 'Centro da tavolo' for the various faculties of the university. The eagle, which is holding a sword in his claws, as a symbol of justice for the Faculty of Law. Other figures from this series are e.g. the rooster with a skull (medicine/surgery), swan and book (literature/philosophy).
