The Vulture isn't the only bird that Spidey bags in this ish. As the story ends, a wounded Peter Parker, with one wing in a sling and the other around Betty's shoulders, displays sudden suavity: "Rest your head on my shoulders, blue eyes, and let's enjoy the silence!" Skinny Pete, with his specs and widow's peak, is clearly a Ditko doppelganger, and as noted earlier, Betty Brant is a stand-in for Ditko's unrequited crush, Flo Steinberg. In case you're wondering if Flo regretted not dating Ditko after his name became the stuff of nerd legend, we have a depressing answer for you:
"Years and years later, I asked Flo if Steve Ditko ever asked her out more than once. She said, 'Probably, but times were different then. You didn't date fellow employees.' ... I could not help but ask if she would have said 'yes' if they did not work together. [Flo replied,] "Bernie, sometimes the answer is just 'no.' She pooh-poohed the whole thing, and we dropped the subject. Sorry, Steve." – Bernie Bubnis, "Steve Ditko and Memories of Another Day," Steve Ditko in the 1960s: In His Own Words, In His Interviews, In the Words of the Fans Who Knew Him. Totalmojo Productions: 2020, p. 43.
