A Pair Of Spanish 18-Bore Madrid-Lock Holster Pistols
By I.P. Estava Of Barcelona, Mid-18th Century
With two-stage barrels, one retaining some original blueing, chiselled with foliage at the girdles and polygonal towards the slightly flared muzzles, the latter each inlaid in gold with symmetrical foliage, octagonal breeches each inlaid with gold foliage, and with a gold cross and four gold quatrefoils above gold-lined maker's stamps on the top flat (Neue Støckel 7368, 7369), gold-lined touch-holes, bright tangs each engraved with rocailles against punched grounds, border engraved rounded locks decorated with rocailles and foliage, rounded cocks and steels en suite, the latter each recessed to fit over the edge of the rainproof pan, engraved safety-catches, moulded figured full stocks (some damage) each carved in low relief with foliage and scrolls behind the rear ramrod-pipe and barrel tang, bright steel mounts decorated en suite with the tangs and comprising shaped flat side-plates, spurred pommels each chiselled with an armoured male portrait bust against a punched gilt ground on the pommel-cap, trigger-guards each with chiselled finial, chiselled martial escutcheons each centred on a vacant oval, turned ramrod-pipes, and horn-tipped ramrods (2)
