Unknown Smith (Koto-Shinto 1400-1780) Japanese Tanto
Shinogi zukuri blade having 13.5-inch cutting edge from kissaki to single-piece wood habaki and 18.625-inches from kissaki to nakagojiri, blade having o-kissaki with hataraki or very active suguha-midare hamon throughout including nioi and appears to display itame hada having areas with burls; nakago having single mekugi ana with an indistinct mei including portions of a character; koshirae including plain wood shirasaya having horn mekugi and white eyelets surrounding mekugi ana

Length: 22 3/4 inches (overall, in saya)
Condition: Fair, overall light to moderate wear consistent with age and normal use; blade having mostly bright polish with no chips to edge noted; some areas of surface discoloration and occasional areas of loose grain on non-tempered portion of blade; blade having been polished repeatedly with nakago appearing slightly thicker than blade; moderate wear to koshirae including scuffs and scratches; joints of saya halves starting to separate beginning at mouth; tsuka having chip to decorative mekugi eyelet with slight separation beginning on joints that does not affect its ability to firmly retain the blade; habaki split on single side
