Item Details
Description
Tonga
Barkcloth
182 x 191 cm

Provenance:
Colette Ghysels, Belgium
Property from a Princely collection

Ngatu are highly valued family treasures and are mainly used for special occasions such as wedding and funeral ceremonies. The distinct Tongan motif of the Manulua that is repeated throughout this ngatu refers to two pairs of bird wings. It may symbolize the bringing together of two groups or families to form a new union indicating that this one was most probably used in a wedding ceremony.
"In Samoa and Tonga, tapa is made from treated bark of the paper mulberry tree (Broussonetia papyrifera). The word tapa refers to the uncolored border of completed ngatu, and its generic use for bark cloth is attributed to early mariners."
Frances Cresantia (Koya Vaka'uta), Tapa Culture: Ancient Knowledge: Sacred Spaces, in Tapa: from Southeast-Asia to Polynesia, Ed. Charleux, Paris, Au Vent des ÃŽles Publications
