Description
Maori, New Zealand
Flax and wool
191 x 156 cm
With label on verso: A.E. Cunningham / New Zealand Rug / 1850
Provenance:
Charles-Edouard Duflon (March 2010)
Property from a Princely collection
Rare and prestigious Maori kaitaka aronui, a type of cloak exclusively worn by high-ranking Maori men and women.
A particular type of flax (Phormium tenax) was especially cultivated to obtain a fine, soft fiber that would give the cloak its distinct silky sheen. The lower edge of the cloak is embellished with a woolen border of geometrical patterns.
A very similar Kaitaka belongs to the collections of the Metropolitan Museum in New York (inv.2020.66).
