Description
SANTIAGO PELEGRÃN MARTINEZ (Alagon, Zaragoza, 1885 - Madrid, 1954).
Rural landscape.
Oil on canvas.
Signed in the lower left corner.
Size: 55 x 45 cm; 80 x 75,5 cm (frame).
A painter of nudes, landscapes and still lifes, Santiago PelegrÃn began his career in Madrid, where he settled in 1910. There, in the following decade, he evolved from academicism towards a more modern language, marked by the influences of Sunyer and Cézanne. In 1925 he took part in the exhibition of the Society of Iberian Artists, and with the proclamation of the Republic he moved increasingly closer to the avant-garde, signing in 1931 the manifesto published in "La Tierra" in favour of cultural renewal. During the war he practised social realism, and in 1938 he moved to Valencia. He produced posters for the Republican side, and paintings on war themes sent to the Spanish Pavilion at the 1937 Paris Exhibition. Despite this, he remained in Spain after the war, keeping his artistic career active. He is currently represented in the MNCA Reina SofÃa in Madrid and other leading public and private collections.
