Description
The hilt wrought entirely of silver, the pommel a fully-modeled and well-detailed lionhead with enameled eyes and tongue; the grip deeply embossed and engraved with flowering vines set with numerous gems, including amethysts, corals, rubies, pearls and garnets, the quillon terminals fully-modeled makara dragons. The curved, single-edged blade with blued and inlaid panels, the East India Company arms worked in gold and silver on a blued ground at the right, and its motto, AUSPICIO REGIS ET SENATUS ANGLIAE in silver on a blued ground at the left. In its velvet-covered wooden scabbard with silver chape decorated and set with gems en suite with the hilt. Mid-19th century. Losses to enamel, blade with areas of pitting and rubbing, velvet worn. Overall length 92.8cm. Condition II
