Item Details
Description
Rookwood Pottery Vase by Emma D. Foertmeyer (American, 1866-1895) - number of flames above Rookwood logo indicate 1893. Signed and numbered on base. A wonderful Rookwood Pottery sugar bowl and creamer set by Emma Foertmeyer. The vessels are both decorated with a floral motif of peach-hued blossoms and spring green leaves over a ground of rich caramel brown hues, with the interior walls of the sugar bowl embellished in a glaze of buttercup yellow hues and the interior of the creamer enveloped in a glaze of olive green and beige hues. These lustrous vessels are marked on the base with the Rookwood logo (a back-to-back "R" and "P" surrounded by flames), identifying shape numbers "555" (creamer) and "55" (sugar bowl), "W" for Iris Glaze, and an "EDF" (Emma D. Foertmeyer) artist's mark. The incised "W" indicates that the design is under an Iris glaze - a clear high glaze that gives a photorealist effect. A beautiful matching creamer and sugar bowl set by Rookwood artist Emma Foertmeyer! Size of sugar bowl: 5.7" W handlespan x 3.625" H (14.5 cm x 9.2 cm)

The Rookwood Pottery Company was founded in 1880 by the artist Maria Longworth-Nichols who created a world-renowned ceramic studio in Cincinnati, Ohio that attracted many reputable artists and ceramicists. Emma D. Foertmeyer worked for Rookwood from 1887 until she passed away in 1895, unfortunately succumbing to tuberculosis at the tender age of 29.

According to Rookwood Pottery scholar Herbert Peck, "To represent the year 1887, one flame point was placed above the R-P mark. Another flame point was added for each year until there were fourteen flame points for the year 1900." (Herbert Peck, "The Book of Rookwood Pottery" p. 136)

Provenance: ex-Nancy and Dr. E.F. Simpson collection, Los Angeles, California, USA, acquired from 1970 to 2000
