Flat round silk fan in black and gilt lacquer frame with carved bone handle. One side painted with birds among flowers, the other side with 'thousand faces' scene, the faces applied ovals of mother of pearl with painted features, the clothing carefully cut scraps of silk, the background of terraces and landscape finely painted in gouache. Fan is protected by later glass covers front and back, held in place with French metal clips. Silk torn, with losses, both sides but particularly on the 'birds and flowers' side. Fan, approx. 10 3/4" diameter, with handle approx. 16 1/4" long.
