An Outstanding Bagobo Shield Mindanao, Philippines, c. 19th century or earlier Very finely carved and elegantly proportioned wood shield. The back is especially of interest, having a raised handle with scrolling ornamentation at each end executed in a manner reminiscent of ancient Southeast Asian bronze designs. Plus the back has more lightly grooved geometric designs at top and bottom. The front is handsomely painted in soft brown and black, with large ringed knob at center and wing-like flourishes to each side. In very good condition, the back with original patina from use and age, the front more recently stained. A superb example of a now rare type of Philippine shield.
