The Antique Phrenology Head Cane on offer features a bone handle carved in the form of a male bust with exceptionally well detailed facial features. Most phrenology canes from this era had manufactured ceramic heads, so this is a rarity. The top of the head is divided into numbered areas that correlate to a legend at the base of the bust. Brain section division lines are engraved and inked black. The bamboo shaft has a thin silver-tone collar and the original metal ferrule. The cane presents very well with a wonderful age patina to the bone handle.

Phrenologists purported to be able to determine (through studying the shape and contours of one's head) personality traits, intelligence, suitability for various tasks, and moral fiber, to name a few. While today phrenology can be debunked as totally unscientific nonsense, from the late 18th century up to the beginning of the 20th century phrenology had a tremendous effect on people's lives. Phrenology readings were often used in hiring employees (a good phrenology reading was a solid job reference), selecting a suitable mate, and even child-rearing practices.
