Item Details
Description
[CIVIL WAR]. US Model 1850 Staff & Field Officer's sword presented to Major John J. Cree, 168th Pennsylvania Infantry, from Captain John R. Jennings of General James Dix's command as Quartermaster.

33 1/2 in. curved, single-edged blade with 24 in. stopped median fuller. Overall length 39 in. Pierced, cast brass guard with "US" surrounded by scroll/foliate design. Wire wrapped chagreen grip and shield of Colombia and acanthus leaves near pommel cap, which is decorated with floral motifs. Lacquer browned steel scabbard with two gilt brass mounts and suspension rings and gilt brass drag with decorative engravings (mounts loose and have moved, tarnish to mounts and drag, some dings to surface). Upper mount inscribed "To Major John J. Cree / from / John F. Jennings," with engraving below depicting rays emanating from five-point star. Blade acid etched, obverse with central panel "US," flanked by floral/scroll designs, reverse with central panel depicting spread-winged eagle, surrounded by floral/scroll and patriotic designs, with "Eisenhauer" etched near ricasso. Provenance: Bill Synnamon of the Union Drummer Boy, Gettysburg, PA (with letter regarding sword from historian William C. Floyd); Dave Lewis, Lakewood, CO (consignor's note).

John R. Jennings (middle initial incorrectly identified as "F." in engraved inscription) of Philadelphia, PA, served in the regular US Army in the Quartermaster's Department. He was assigned to General James Dix's command as a volunteer. Jennings applied for and received a commission as captain, AQM, 5 December 1863.

John J. Cree enlisted on 1 December 1862 as a major and was commissioned into Field & Staff, 168th Pennsylvania Infantry. He was mustered out on 25 July 1863 at Harrisburg, PA.

The 168th PA saw service at Suffolk, VA, and New Bern, NC. The regiment participated in General Dix's campaign on the Peninsula from 27 June - 27 July 1863.

Considering both Jennings and Cree served under General Dix, it is believed that Jennings presented the sword offered here to Cree when the regiment mustered out of service.
